History of the Vedda

The Vedda are Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, believed to be among the island’s earliest inhabitants. Traditionally they lived as hunter-gatherers in forests and caves and maintained a deep relationship with the natural environment.

Today, communities in areas like Dambana and near Nilgala work to preserve their traditions, beliefs, and cultural identity while adapting to modern life.
